Stalin demands a 2nd front
Stalin wants to spread troops out further to a larger area so that the USSR would reduce the amount of casualties on their home front. Allied powers delayed, increasing tensions as Stalin believed they cared less about the safety of the Soviet Union.
“Soft underbelly” of Europe
Churchill’s plan to attack Nazi Germany through the more vulnerable Meditterenean area. Established the US as highly motivated to put an end to Nazism through military tactics.
Casablanca Conference (1943)
Churchill and FDR calling for Axis powers to unconditionally surrender w/o seeking a separate peace with them.
D-Day
The official day the Allies agreed to push for a 2nd front. Set Germany further back and set the stage for the end of the war.
Conditional surrender of Vichy French in N Africa and of Italians
Vichy surrenders in North Afria after Axis powers surrender in Italy. Ends camapaign.

Strategy to build front from West to Switzerland, spreading further but still moving slowly

Allied forces advanced as GErmany led a massive retaliation against them
Central dilemma of the war
United States wanted to stop Nazism and Communism from spreading simultaneously. FDR was more concerned w/ winning WWII over starting the Cold War. This allowed the USSR to spread in the East and inc military presence until Truman.
( Chiang vs Mao ) vs Japan
China had internal issues with Communisim (Mao) vs Democracy (Chiang). All while fighting Japan after their desires to exploit Chinese industries.
Ho Chi Minh in WWII
Communist Leade, helped Us with plans against Japan, saved American airfighter.
“The Big Three” at the Yalta Conference
Meeting of FDR, Churchill, and Stalin. They discussed plans for reorganizing Germany. Split West and East Germany, including West and East Berlin.
Island Hopping
Capturing islands near the Japanese coast in an attempt to move closer to Japan.
Manhattan Project
The development of the nuclear bomb built during WWII in a race against Nazis to establish the 1st nuclear bomb. Eventually used to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Helped portray image that the US was ready for rising conflicts.
