Linear fracture
Is in the same direction as the length of the bone
Transverse fracture
Goes across the length of bone
Oblique fracture
On an angle to length of bone
Spiral fracture
Where the bone has been twisted/there are some forces of torsion
Comminuted
Fracture where bone splits into different fragments
Open fracture
Bone punctures through skin
Closed fracture
Broke. Bone stays in skin
Compression fracture
Common in vertebrae and heels, common in old people
- bone is crushed by compression forces
Stress fracture
Small and subtle fractures caused by overuse
Greenstick
Common in children, incomplete fracture that didn’t break all the way
Avulsion fracture
Part of the bone is ripped away where a ligament or tendon attaches
