Fractures Flashcards
Is any break in the continuity of the bone.
fracture/ broken bone
A fracture with communication to the outside environment
Open (compound) fracture
A fracture with no communication to the outside environment.
Close fracture
Differentiate Pathologic, stress, and traumatic fracture
pathologic - fx d/t pre-existing illness
stress - fx d/t repeated , unaccustomed loading
traumatic - fx d/t sustained trauma or blunt force
Differentiate the ffg. fractures
transverse
spiral
oblique
transverse - fx d/t simple angulatory force (horizontal)
spiral - fx d/t torsion in turning direction
oblique - fx that is diagonal to bone’s axis
Differentiate the ffg. fractures
linear
impacted
avulsion
compression/wedge
linear - fx that is parallel to bone’s axis (vertical)
impacted - fx d/t bone fragments are driven to each other
avulsion - fx wherein fragment of bone is separated
compression/wedge - fx usually in vertebrae, front portion collapses d/t osteoporosis
Explain what is incomplete fx, complete fx and comminuted fx
Incomplete - bone fragments are still partially joined
Complete - bone fragments totally separated
Comminuted fx - bone is broken 3-5 more segments
What are the 2 shoulder fractures
Clavicular fx and scapular fx
fx that occurs d/t direct blow to the humerus affecting that radial and medial nerve
Supracondylar fx
Fracture of the proximal third of the ulna with dislocation of the head of the radius
Monteggia (Ulnar fx)
Fracture of the radius with dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint
Galeazzi (Radial fx)
Fracture
Distal fracture of the radius with DORSAL displacement of the wrist and hand
Colles (radial fracture)
Distal fracture of the radius with VOLAR displacement of the wrist and hand
Smith’s fx (radial)
Intra-articular fracture of the distal radius with dislocation of the radiocarpal joint (joint that connects the forearm to the wrist)
Barton fx
Comminuted intra-articular fracture through the base of the 1st MC bone
Rolando Fx
