A break or crack in the bone with no external wound
Closed fracture
Break or crack in the bone that is associated directly with an open wound (you may or may not see the bone poking out of the wound)
Open or compound fracture
Displacement of a bone or joint caused by connective tissues holding a joint in position
Dislocation
Partial tearing or stretching of joint structures without dislocation or fracture. Can involve ligament, tendon or both
Sprain
Signs of a fracture
Lameness on a leg.
Unusual angle of the area.
Swelling
First aid of a suspected fracture
Stop any bleeding with pressure (do not flush wound)
Prevent animal from moving if possible
Never attempt splinting or or pushing bone back in
keep animal quiet & calm
open fractures should be covered with sterile gauze or a clean cloth
