Signs
At the time of the bite the animal may yelp & start to rub or scratch.
Within 10 minutes to 24 hours may start to swell.
Can develop hives, difficulty breathing, fast heart rate, trembling, wheezing, diarrhoea, collapse & shock.
Treatment
Examine for stinger & remove carefully with tweezers.
To relieve itching & pain you can apply :-
Wasp sting (alkaline) - neutralise with Vinegar
Bee Sting (acidic)- Neutralise with Bicarbonate of soda.
Apply an icepack or cold compress to help with swelling.
If no improvement call the vet.
Adder Bites
Identifying the Adder
Adder has an X or V on the back of its head & a dark zigzag zigzag pattern on their backs.
Active most during Spring & Summer.
First Aid for Adder Bites
Confine the animal, the more it moves around the more the venom will spread.
Do not touch the wound, again this can spread the venom.
either bring a car to the animal or if you can, carry it to the car & take to the vets immediately. Call the vet to let them know you are on your way so they can be prepared.
Adder Bite Symptoms
Pain & swelling around the bite.
Puncture wounds in the site of the swelling.
Pain, bleeding, lameness & nervousness in the pet.
