Fracture Management Flashcards
Common causes of fractures
High mechanism of injury
(ie. falls, car accidents, high impact conditions)
5 types of fractures
- Transverse
- Oblique
- Spiral
- Comminuted
- Greenstick
What’s a transverse fracture
A fracture straight across a bone caused from high impact direct force
What’s an oblique fracture
A fracture that runs across the bone at an angle. Often caused from a twisting force
What’s a spiral fracture
A fracture that encircles the bone. Often caused from a twisting or jerking injury
What’s a comminuted fracture
A fracture that has broken into 2 or more pieces of bone at the fracture site. Often caused by a high impact
What’s a greenstick fracture
Usually occurs in children an impacts the outer portion of the bone. Inner section of bone typically remains intact.
Goals of fracture management
Immobilization
Control bleeding
Dress open wounds
Pain management
What’s a stable pelvic fracture
Often involve only one break and the broken bones are not displaced
What’s an unstable pelvic fracture
Involve two or more breaks that cause bones to be displaced. Pelvis ring is no longer stable
What’s NEXUS
Criteria to assess if patient requires SMR
What’s SMR
Spinal Motion Restriction
