Fracture healing assessment Flashcards
How does bone heal best?
under a little tensile strength (and axial motion)
What strains discourage bone healing?
- shear strain (including torsion)
2. absolute rigidity
How long should it take an adequately stabilized fracture to heel?
6-10 weeks
What are factors that affect the length of time it takes for a fracture to heal?
- nature of fracture
- location of fracture
- degree of soft tissue disruption
- motion and strain at fracture site
- direction of strain
- type of healing (secondary vs primary)
- use of limb
- species
- age
How long should it take 2-5 months dog to heal?
2-4 weeks
5-12 months dogs to heal
4-8 weeks
adults to heal
6-10 weeks
geezers to heal
12-16 weeks
Why is resorption a good sign?
because it is resorption of dead bone–often most obvious at 4
How long does it take for callus to mineralize sufficiently see?
6 weeks
How long does it take for callus to mineralize sufficiently see?
6 weeks
by 4 weeks after surgery/coaptation, what should you be able feel?
noticeably reduced mobiity fracture getting “sticky”
What are the three As
- alignment and reduction
- apparatus
- activity
