Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Energy Flashcards
Fossil Fuels Definition
Hydrocarbon-containing material formed naturally underground from the remains of dead plants and animals
3 types of fossil fuels
Coal (Solid)
Crude Oil (Liquid)
Natural Gas (Gas)
Pros of Fossil Fuels
Cheap
Can be used in any weather condition
Much of our current infrastructure is already designed to run on fossil fuels
Cons of Fossil fuels
Limited resource
Produces carbon dioxide when burned which is a greenhouse gas and contributes to global warming
Can even produce toxic gases when burned
Nuclear energy
Energy that is obtained from nuclear reactions, such as nuclear fission reactions
Pros of Nuclear Energy
Does not produce any pollutants
Can be used in any weather conditions
Although limited, will not run out for a very long time
Cons of Nuclear Energy
Nuclear power stations produce radioactive waste which remains harmful for thousands of years
Quite expensive
