Conduction, Convection and Radiation Flashcards
What are the 3 ways heat energy is transferred and their corresponding medium
Solids - Conduction
Liquids - Convection
Vacuum - Radiation
What is conduction
When one end of a solid is heated, the particles on that end start to vibrate as energy is transferred to the kinetic energy stores of the particles, as they begin to vibrate even faster they cause their neighboring particles to vibrate as well which continues as a chain effect until reaching the end of the solid and heat is spread out evenly
What is the term for how well objects transfer energy by conduction? Name a material with a high amount of this
Thermal Conductivity
Metals
What is convection
The warmer side of the liquid’s particles will gain energy and since they are not bounded strongly, they will spread out and ultimately become less dense. This will cause them to rise above the more dense parts of the liquid. The more dense parts of the liquids will now be near the heat source and also become less dense whilst the less dense particles from before will become dense again as they cool at the top. This cycle loops.
How to reduce convection
Stop the free flow of fluids
Radiation
The emission and absorption of infra red waves. The hotter an object is, the more it radiates.
