Fossil Fuels Flashcards
1
Q
How is coal formed?
A
Coal is formed from the remains of trees as they do not decompose after death due to the lack of acidic conditions and oxygen for bacteria. Overtime the plant remains are covered with sediment and compressed. High temperature and pressure creates coal.
2
Q
How is crude oil formed?
A
Crude oil is formed from plankton which may die on the sea bed. And since there is no oxygen they do not decompose. Overtime they are compressed by sediment and over time heat and pressure convert them into crude oil.
3
Q
How is natural gas formed?
A
Natural gas is mainly the hydrocarbon methane.
