Building started in 20BCE
the temple is thought to have been finished by 2BCE

What was in the Forum of Augustus
- Temple to Mars Ultor
- a statue of Augustus on a chariot in the centre
- 4 alcoves the top right one contained statues of the Summi viri (best men) and a statue of Romulus, the top left contained statues of members of the Julian family, kings of Alba Longa and a statue of Aeneas.
why did it take so long to start builing the forum of Augustus
Augustus had to find space, even after all that the forum is imperfect due to the top right being cut off so that it doesnt sit ontop the housing behind
what is wrong with the Forum of Augustus
It is missing the top right corner
why is it important that the top corner of the Forum of Augustus is missing
It is important that Augustus didnt use his power to force citizens to relocate when he knocked down their housing. This shows him to be merciful and considerate of the people of Rome. This makes him favourable amoung the lower classes
describe what is in the centre of the forum
a statue depicting Augustus atop a chariot pulled by 4, abreast, horses. Under it is inscribed with the title Pater Patriae. Implying that Rome is Augustus’ house.
describe the content of the top left alcove in the Forum of Augustus
In the middle there is a statue of Aeneas of the sides of him are members of the Julian family one one side and on the other are famous people of Alba Longa.
This is important because ist emphasises his legitimacy by reminding people who he is related to.
describe the content of the top right alcove in the Forum of Augustus
in the middle is a statue of Romulus, on either side of him are the summi viri ( the best men). this is important and powerful because Augustus is controlling what it is to be a good Roman.

In addition to the usual there are 3 statues
on the left is Ventus genetrix (the mother)
in the centre is Mars
and on the right is Julius Caesar
these 3 dieties are all connected to Augustus - emphasing his divine link
what is a forum
A multipurpose, centrally located open area that was surrounded by public buildings and colonnades and that served as a public gathering place, for business, public speaking and much more.
