Forms of Worship Flashcards
Liturgical Worship
- A prayer that follows a set structure (Eucharist)
- Typically is the same
- Holy communion, Mass
- Consists of a Sermon, reading of the Bible
- Easy to follow, comforting, concise
- Can lack energy, loss of interest
Informal Worship
- Worship that has no set structure and is often spontaneous
- Usually in evangelical church services
- It is not planned and can therefore deviate from the intended message
- It is more engaging and allows people to be moved by the Holy Spirit
- It resembles the type of worship offered by Christians in the first decades of the Church
Individual Worship
- It is a Protestant tradition that builds a personal relationship with God
- It can be done anywhere or anytime
- It allows for direct contact with God
The Nature of Prayer
- Jesus said that prayer is important
- Adoration, confessional, penitential, praise, thanks, supplication
- Jesus taught his disciples how to pray using the Lord’s prayer
Importance of Prayer (Protestants)
- Build a relationship with God
- Direct contact with God
- Creates personal and spiritual healing
- Prayer in a church gives guidance
Importance of Prayer (Catholics)
- To give thanks
- Gives them a purpose to life
- Deepens a believers faith
- Remember the sacrifice of Jesus
Set Prayers
- A type of praying
- An example is the Lord’s prayer
- They are very useful
- In the Bible the Lord’s Prayer is referred to as the perfect pray
Informal Prayer
- Speaks to God in more day to day language
- They may not relate to the language of formal prayers
Quakers
- Mainly consists of personal reflection
- They sit in silence for the idea of being in the presence of God
- Does not consist of any set prayers
- People may be moved to speak by the Holy Spirit
Evangelical Worship
- Often informal
- Seek to feel the Holy Spirit
- They might; fall into a trance, speak in tongues
- Typically at a Pentecostal church
- There is lots of singing and dancing

INFORMAL WORSHIP - SOURCE OF WISDOM
“sing to God, song in praise to his name.” - PSLAMS 68:4-5
