The feeling of guilt guides people to reach a solution or follow laws and rules
What is tradition?
Tradition is customs or norms that ensure that people conform to the rules
What is internalisation of social rules and morality?
It is working out what is the right thing to do and therefore knowing what is right or wrong
What are external forms of social control?
It is when external pressures persuade or compel someone to conform to the rules
What are the two external forms of social control?
Coercion
Fear of punishment
What is coercion?
Coercion is verbally or physically forcing someone to conform with the rules
What is fear of punishment?
The use of a punishment as a threat to stop people from offending
What are the two types of deterrence?
Individual deterrence
General deterrence
What is individual deterrence?
A punishment imposed on offenders to deter or prevent them from committing further crimes
What is general deterrence?
Deterrence that prevents others from committing similar crimes
