What is retribution?
Retribution aims to punish the offender to the level that is deserved
What is rehabilitation?
The aim of rehabilitation is to reform the offenders behaviour to prevent reoffending
Where can the aim of rehabilitation be seen?
In:
community sentences
probation orders
What is a community sentence?
A punishment that is carried out in the community
What is a probation order?
A punishment that is carried out in the community while on probation, this may include unpaid work etc…
What is deterrence?
Deterrence is when offenders are deterred to commit further crime or when individuals are deterred from committing similar crimes
What is public protection?
The idea that the punishment must have a purpose for society by protecting us from dangerous criminals
What is the definition of incapacitation?
A sentence of the court to prevent further offending which may include a term of imprisonment
What is reparation?
Aims to ensure that the defendant pays back to the victim or society for the crime that they committed such as a community sentence
What is the definition of denunciation?
Aims to show the offenders that society disapproves of their behaviour and that it is unacceptable
