Direct Democracy
All citizens participate and vote on everything.
Example: In ancient Athens, Greece they held assemblies where citizens voted to pass laws
Representative Democracy
All citizens participate through a representative they elect. The representative then speaks for a large amount of people.
Example: We elect senators
Monarchy
Ruled by Kings and Queens. Leaders gain power through family.
Example: England has a monarchy (Middle aged France)
Dictatorship
1 ruler with the control over all citizens. Citizens are not allowed to voice their opinion.
Example: North Korea’s leader Kim Jong II is considered a dictator (also a monarchy) (Hitler was a dictator in Germany)
Oligarchy (like dictatorship)
A group of people run the whole country Example: Russia under communism Power can be biased off of: Family power - Aristocracy Military strength - Military Junta Religious control - Theocratic Oligarchy
Theocracy
Ruled by a “god” Society uses religious law to settle disputes
Example: Saudia Arabia and Afghanistan
Example: Iran follows the Qur’an, as its guide
Anarchy
No government at all
Example: Libia in the 80’s - 90’s (Dictator is overthrown)
