Forming Compounds Flashcards
What is Ionic bonding?
A bond between a metal and nonmetal where the metal will lose e (cation) and the nonmetal will gain e (anion)
Ionic bonds: what do they exist as?
Ions!
Ionic bonds: what state are they usually?
Solid
Ionic bonds: what do they have alternating things of?
+ve and -ve charges
Ionic bonds: do they conduct electricity? What is it called?
Only dissolved in water or in molten state. Called electrolyte.
Ionic Bonds: low or high boiling and melting points?
High bc strong force of attraction, therefore takes a lot to break them.
Ionic bonds: Know how to do the lewis dot diagram
See notes
What are covalent bonds?
A bond between 2 nonmetals that share electrons.
Covalent bonds: are they ions?
NO! They share e s
Covalent bonds: do they conduct electricity?
NO! Non electrolyte
Covalent bonds: lower or higher boiling/melting points?
Lower. Bonds not as strong.
Covalent bonds: state(s) at room temp?
Soft solids or liquids or gasses
Covalent bonds: know lewis dot diagrams
see notes
Covalent bonds: what is a single bond?
A single bond is 2 atoms sharing 2 e s
Covalent bonds: what is a double bond?
2 atoms sharing 4 e s
