Formation Of Fossil Fuels Flashcards
What are the main fossil fuels ?
Coal, oil and natural gas.
How was coal formed ?
plants use energy from sun + carbon dioxide to grow => plants die and fall down in swamp => sink to the bottom of muddy swamp => mud collects at bottom of swamp and stop plants from decaying => whole area is flooded by sea => layers of sand collect on sea bed => builds up to create enough pressure to turn sand layers to sandstone => mud layer to mudstone => heat from earth + pressure from mudstone + sandstone => turns dead plants to coal => mill year later coal burned for electricity in power stations => releasing harmful gases into atmosphere
How was oil and natural gas formed ?
Ocean plants use energy from sun + carbon dioxide in the water to live => animals in ocean get energy by eating those plants => plants + animals in ocean die => the ones that don’t get eaten fall onto seabed => storm/landslide happens => new layer of mud to form on top dead animals + plants => layers of sand build on top => pressure of sand layers => mud turn into mudstone => pressure of mudstone => dead plants + animals turn into oil and natural gas => mill years later oil + gas burned for electricity in power stations => releasing harmful gases into atmosphere
The basic overview of how fossil fuels where formed
Fossil fuels were formed millions if years ago from dead plants and animals that had turned into oil, gas and coal by immense heat and pressure.
