When does acid rain occur?
A
Acid rain occurs when emissions from factories, cars or heating boilers make contact with the water in the atmosphere

What do these emissions contain?
A
Nitrogen oxides, sulphuric dioxide and sulphuric trioxide

What happens when nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide mix with water?
A
It creates sulphurous acid, nitric acid and sulphuric acid.

How else does it occur naturally?
A
Through volcanic eruptions.

What are the effects of acid rain?

- soils become acidic which affects plant growth
- lakes, rivers do the oceans become more acidic which in turn affects the plants and animals which live in them
- buildings, metal structures and sculptures made of limestone are damaged

What is the only way to stop acid rain ?
A
By reducing the emissions that cause it, this means not using fossil fuels to generate electricity but rather referring to renewable energy sources.
