Form and Function Science Test Flashcards
What is a structure?
a structure is something with a definite size, shape, purpose, and can hold a load
What is form?
Form is the shape, size, and materials of a structure
What is function?
Function is a structure’s purpose and/or ability to do something
What are the types of structures?
The three main categories of structures are shell structures, frame structures and solid structures.
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull. A force can change an object’s speed, shape and direction. A force can make an object start moving or stop moving.
What are the two main types of forces?
The two main types of forces are internal forces and external forces.
What is an external force? EXAMPLE?
An external force is a force that acts from the outside of an object or structure. EX: Gravity is an external and magnetic force that acts from the outside on everything on the earth
What is an internal force? EXAMPLE?
An internal force is a force that acts from within an object or structure. EX: Compression is a force that squeezes or presses something together, and acts from within a structure.
What is Compression?
:Compression is a force that squeezes or pushes something together
What is Tortion?
Torsion is a force in a twisting motion
What is tension?
Tension is a stretching force that causes something to expand or lengthen.
What is shear?
Shear is a force that pushes in opposite directions.
What is a load?
A load is any type of weight or source of pressure that adds an external force to a structure.
What is a static load?
A static load is a weight that doesn’t change
What is a dynamic load?
A dynamic load is a weight that can change when acting on a structure.
What is symmetry?
Symmetry is when an object is the same on both sides. Symmetry is also referred to as a sense of balance and harmony.
What is a line of symmetry
A line of symmetry is an imaginary line that can go in any direction, as long as the parts of the objects reflect each other on each sides.
What are aesthetics?
aesthetics is the beauty or artistic taste of something.
What is Centre of gravity?
Centre of gravity is the average Centre of weight in an object or structure.
What is an arch bridge?
An arch bridge is a bridge that is semicircular shape that supports the load. It also has retaining walls to add extra support to the load
What is a Suspension Bridge?
A suspension bridge has cables suspended from tall towers to support to the load.
What is a beam bridge?
A beam bridge has horizontal beams supported by piers to support the load
What is a Truss Bridge
A Truss brisge is similar to a beam bridge, but uses a triangle brace to add extra support to the load.
What are some reasons that structural failure can occur?
Some reasons that structural failure can occur is because of design failure, improper communication, poor foundations and unanticipated forces.`
