Studies to support behaviour modification as a way of treating offenders

• Cullen and Seddon: boys from young offenders’ institute placed on a regime where positive behaviours were reinforced with tokens that could be exchanged for primary reinforcers (sweets, chocolate). Over duration of the study, those who were placed on the token-econony system began to produce socially desirable behaviours.
• Rice (1990): 92 prisoners in max security psychiatric hospital. Found that the success in the institution had no influence on the offenders’ outcome when released.
