Forensic science Flashcards

1
Q

Application of molecular biology

A
  • Human discrimination (criminal, paternity,DVI)
  • Flora and Fauna discrimination (wildlife crime, Stock rustling, phylogenic id of botanical material)
  • Microorganism discrimination (CT against bioterrorism)
  • Contamination of implicit drug

Q

Wildlife Crime

A
  • Illegal trade of plant, animal, eggs and fishing
  • Largely undetected crime due to lack of victim
  • Cost around 6-12 Billion dollar annually
  • Most work conducted in museum or university
  • Use genomic and mitochondrial DNA to determine
  • Result in: loss of diversity, habitat destruction, undermine legal trade, increase in transmission of disease and introduction of pest

Q

phylogenic id of botanical material

A
  • Cannabis DNA profiling can be used to obtain tactical and strategical intelligent on the implicit drug trade
  • mDNA id of grass ( the most common trace evidence)

Q

STR

A
  • Short tandem repeat
  • Can be used for forensic science
  • Amplify the DNA (PCR) and get a readout from it
  • Compare the crime sample with the reference sample (DNA loci and alleles)
  • Frequency calculation must be taken into consideration
