Q

Norming

A
  • The team begins to discuss what is expected of them from the outside world.
  • To meet this stage the group will be sufficiently functional.
  • The individuals have to ‘forget’ themselves and think outside the box, there are other ways of accomplishing the task.
  • All need not agree, but the majority have to agree.

Q

Problems using teams

A
  1. Coordination – Process errors/loss in larger groups. Also, greater chance of including a weaker performing individual in the decision making.
  2. Motivation – Social loafing (people are prone to exert less effort on a task if they are in a group versus when they work alone.)

Q

Advantages using teams

A
  1. Larger groups will be more likely to include a member who performs better than the rest and, for example, get a correct answer faster on behalf of the entire team.
  2. BUT the groups do not perform better than the best member – and social dynamics could weaken the best practice.

Q

Why virtual teams?

A
  • Members of virtual teams can work on several types of tasks in different teams
  • Best talent without geographical restrictions.
  • Less costly, more green, more flexible.

Cultural- and status differences are often reduced in virtual teams, and there is less pressure to conform to the social norm. Communication is shallow (overfladisk) and conflict can spin out of control.
