Turning point/significance:

Significant turning point - first step away from isolation
Gained an empire, beginning of emergence as a world power
However, not massive turning point - retreated back into isolation until the first world war, and imperialism could be described as ‘accidental’
Still significant

Motivation:
Imperialism - world power
Economic - need for new markets
Manifest destiny/moral crusade

Inc. plans for League of nations, formed 1920 - US didn’t join
Wilson faced backlash from congress

Turning point/significance:
Significant in that a president was showing active interest and intervention in global affairs
Arguably set a precedent for future foriegn policy
LoN laid groundwork for UN and NATO
But not that significant/not a turning point - wilson received backlash from congress and America returned to isolation

END OF COLD WAR

Key information:

Reagan series of diplomatic actions, visits Moscow 1988, visits Berlin 1987
INF agreement 1987 - abolished a whole class of nuclear weapons and built on the SALT agreements.
USSR loosens hold on Europe
Berlin wall falls 1989
End of cold war officially declared 1989
Gorbachev was completely willing to abandon the war, and withdrew troops from afghanistan and stopped using force to control eastern europe, allowing communism to fall apart.

Significance/turning point:
Significant as the beginning of better relations and a time of relative peace
Turning point away from conflict that had dominated for decades
The INF agreement was significant as it abolished a whole class of nuclear weapons and built on the SALT agreements.
Not as important turning point as othr things arguably as end of cold war happened kinda organically and without that many active decisions on the part of the US president (as Gorbechev's involvement was significant)
