Isolationism
The idea of not engaging in other conflicts or issues beyond the proximity of the USA.
Colonialism/Imperialism
Take over other countries as colonies.
Spanish-American war
American helps the Cuban revolutionists defeat the Spanish.
Sinking of the USS Maine brings America into the war.
Yellow Journalism
Exaggerated stories written in newspapers to convince Americans it was a good idea to get involved in Cuba.
Monroe’s doctrine
Any effort from Europe to colonize land in the Americas would be seen as an act of aggression.
Roosevelts corollary
In 1904 US President Teddy Roosevelt announces to the world that the US will intervene if other countries attempt to influence America’s sphere of influence (South, Central and North America).
World War I
USA Tried to stay neutral.
Profited from the Arms Trade.
Only got involved after the sinking of the boat the Lusitania and the Zimmerman telegram (an invitation from Germany to Mexico to become allies and fight the USA)
Red Scare part 1
Widespread fear of communism in the United States
Triggered by:
Nationalism after WWI,
Russian Revolution,
Anarchist bombings in the US,
American trade unions.
The Marshall plan
Offer of the USA to rebuild Europe after WWII.
Countries who accept money, allow America to have bases on their soil.
Western Europe accepts money, Eastern Europe does not.
World War II
Again, tried to stay neutral.
Lend lease Act: Lend weapons and supplies to the Allies. Some to be paid back after the war.
Interventionism: Involvement after Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese.
The cuban missile crisis
Standoff between the USA and the USSR in Cuba.
America had a lot of nuclear missiles pointed at the USSR in Turkey and Italy.
USSR moved a lot of missiles to Cuba to point at America.
America blocked all transport to Cuba to avoid more missiles being placed, STANDOFF.
