Forces within Molecules Flashcards

1
Q

Temporary dipole-dipole forces

A

Very weak and occur in all molecular substances
Attraction between nuclei in one molecule and valence electrons in another molecule.
Only intermolecular force acting in non-polar substances.

Q

Permanent dipole-dipole forces

A

electronegative atoms draw more electron density towards them creating a permanent dipole within the molecule. Electrostatically attracted to the opposite dipole on neighbouring molecules.

A

Strongest intermolecular attraction
Occurs between molecules where H is connected to N, O or F.
