Forces/ Pressure Flashcards
what forces are and examples of different types
force is any interaction that when unopposed will change the motion of an object
-push
-pull
-stretch
-restrain
Identify forces that can have a negative and a positive effect on our role as a health professional and how are these over
Increasing height of IV poles increases force pushing down on the fluids this increases the pressure of fluids flowing through IV sites which speeds up the drip rate. ( this uses gravity as the force)
Pressure damage/ulcers from patients lack of mobility or bed bound
What are the effects of pressure on the skin on a bed bound hospitalised patient?
Decubitus ulcers
The Pt weight is not distributed over the weight-bearing areas.
- Inactivity leads to increased pressure over specific areas, and tissue breaks down due to pressure forces.
Friction
too much or too little slide
- Too little in wet areas can contribute to slips and falls.
- Too much can contribute to beds and wheelchairs being harder to move.
- Elastic adhesive dressings that are too tight can cause friction blisters bewyween the dressing and patient.
pressure
the amount of force measured in a specific area
