Q

Discuss how the body uses water

A

Maintains hydration of cells

  • Assists in the removal of toxins, sweat, tears, urine, and faeces.
  • Major components of body fluids- CSF, synovial, cytoplasm, blood plasma

Q

how water moves in and out of cells (osmosis)

A

Osmosis is important for cellular function as this allows water (and other dissolved fluids) to move across semi-permeable membranes.

Water needs to move in and out of our body cells to maintain equilibrium of solutes and fluids

Q

describe the movement of air in and out of the body and relate it to Boyles law.

A

When we breathe in the ribs move upward and outward the diaphragm flattens. This increases the volume of the lungs.

  • As the volume is increased, the pressure is lower than the atmospheric pressure outside of the body.
  • Air diffuses into the lungs as it moves from an area of high pressure to low pressure.

Q

Discuss Diffusion

A

Diffusion is important for cellular function as this allows substances to move across semi-permeable membranes

Example: respiration- The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of the alveoli in the lungs.

Substances such as ions and gasses constantly being transferred in and out of cells via diffusion to maintain homeostasi
