Diagnostic Flashcards
X ray diagnostic tools used in healthcare and state how they provide an image
Produces images as radiation beams are either absorbed or passed through a body structure
Structures with high density or high atomic mass absorb more radiation beams giving a bright white contrast image
Frequent exposure can cause deformities; pregnant women can’t get X-rays as the radiation can cause deformities to the foetus
Ultrasound diagnostic tools used in healthcare and state how they provide an image
Ultrasound produces an image as sound waves bounce of different structures in the body
Transducer sends a high-frequency sound wave through a body area
Sound waves bounce off the structures and pictures are formed
Safe for patients and staff because it only uses sound waves
Good for showing fluid-filled cavities and is popular in producing images of the foetus during pregnancy
MRI diagnostic tools used in healthcare and state how they provide an image
Uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create images
Produces detailed images (atoms from the patient)
Patients with implanted devices cannot have MRIs unless the material is titanium
Good for investigating or diagnosing conditions that affect soft tissue such as tumors or brain disorders.
CT Computed tomography diagnostic tools used in healthcare and state how they provide an image
combines computer technology and x rays to produce detailed images of all body structures
Computed Tomography vs MRI scan
MRI:
detailed pictures in soft tissues
bony structures are less detailed as compare to CT
no known side effects on radiation
CT Scan
less detailed compared to MRI Scan
bony structures are more clear and detailed
little side effects. frequent radiation with Ct scans might rarely cause cancer
