Deflection force
Pressing on an object causing it to bend
Ex. Trampoline or Diving board
Tension force
Pulling from 2 or more directions causing it to stretch (be tense)
Ex. Tug of war
Compression force
Pushing from 2 or more directions to causing it to be squeezed (compressed)
Ex. Slinky
Torsion force
Twisting an object to cause its parts to move in opposite directions
Ex. Wringing out a towel
Shearing force
Pulling an object to cause its parts to move in opposite directions
Ex. Tearing a piece of paper
Translational motion
Movement in a straight line
Ex. Pushing a table or Moving a cart on a straight track
Rotational motion
Movement in a circle (rotating)
Helical motion
A combination of translation and rotational at the same time
Ex: Helicopter, Frisbee or Drill press
Projectile motion
Movement in a curved path in the air affected by gravity
Ex: Basketball shot, Arrow being shot ( basically a parabola)
Direct link
Only uses itself to link together
Ex: Lego
Indirect link
Separate part that links objects together
Ex: Staple
Rigid link
A rigid link cannot be bent
Ex: Screw
Flexible link
A flexible link is flexible and bendable
Ex: Phone case
Removable link
A removable link can be removed
Ex: Velcrow
Permanent link
A permanent link cannot be removed without damaging any object
Ex: Glue
