Cells Flashcards
Differences from plant cells and animal cells
Plant cells have the same things as animals cells + a cell wall and chloroplasts.
Cell membrane
Holds the cell together (gooey shell) and allows materials to pass in and out of the cells
Ex: Border, Rubber part of a water balloon
Cytoplasm
The cells environment made up of mostly water and dissolved materials
Ex: Water in a water balloon
Nucleus
Command center in the cell
Ex: Mayors office
Nucleolus
Inside the nucleus and stores the cell’s DNA and makes ribosomes.
Ex: Files about the city in the mayor’s office
Mitochondria
POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL. Takes in nutrients and converts it into energy
Ex: Corn power plant
Ribozomes
Smallest organelle and is made in the nucleus. They do all the instructions given to them from the DNA in the nucleolus.
Ex: Government workers
Endoplasm Reticulum (E.R.)
Transports proteins and/or ribosomes to different parts of the cell (the ribosoms make it rough E.R. ex: Traffic)
Ex: Roads
Golgi bodies
Removes waste and packs up useful material and transports it to other cells
Ex: Post office
Lysosomes
Digestive system. Breaks down materials and sometimes recycles the broken down materials
Ex: Recycling and garbage plants
Vacuoles
Storage for food and water. Plants have very large vacuoles because they have to store food and water for long periods of time.
Ex: Storage containers
Centrosomes and Microtubuals
Internal structure of the cell
Ex: Structural concrete posts
Cell wall
**ONLY FOUND IN PLANT CELL. Help give cell structure and durability especially for cell membrane. It has many holes so materials can pass through.
Ex: walls-ish
Chloroplats
**ONLY FOUND IN PLANT CELL. Contains chlorophyl whoich gives lants their green color. Creates evergy from sunlight.
