Forces and Motions Flashcards
force
a push or a pull on an object
net force
the combination of all forces acting on an object
balanced forces
equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions. When forces are
balanced, an object does not move.
unbalanced forces
forces acting on an object that do not cancel each other out. Unbalanced
forces cause an object to move.
newton
the unit that measures force
direction
a line or course along which something is moving
position
where an object is located
motion/movement
a change in position or location
inertia
the ability to resist change
gravity
a force that causes objects with mass to attract each other. Gravity is the force that
pulls everything toward the center of the Earth.
friction
a force that works against motion
magnetism
the force of repulsion (pushing) or attraction (pulling) between poles of magnets
speed
a measure of how fast something moves through a certain distance over a certain time
period
momentum
the measure of how hard it is to slow or stop an object
displacement
happens when one object pushes away or takes the place of another object
