Forces And Matter Flashcards
Why do you need more than one force to stretch compress or bend an object?
If there’s only one force, the object will just move in the direction that the force is acting in
What is elastic behaviour?
It will return its original shape when forces are removed
What is inelastic behaviour?
It will keep its new shape after the forces are removed
If force is directly proportional to extension, what is the equation?
F=KX
force = spring constant x extension
What is the limit of proportionality?
When it becomes non-linear
What happens after the elastic limit?
The object is permanently deformed
What is linear?
A straight line
What is non linear?
When the spring is stretched too far
What is the equation for work done of a spring?
E = 1/2kx ²
What equipment is necessary for investigating extension? (5)
- spring
- hanging mass
- clamp stand
- ruler
- set square
Why is keeping the same spring necessary?
Different springs have different spring constants
Why should you measure the spring from the same point each time?
Otherwise the results will be inaccurate
What happens if the original length is not subtracted?
There will be a zero error on the graph but the gradient will be the same
What does a zero error represent?
The original length of the spring
What is the method for investigating extension?
- Measure spring’s original length
- Hand 0.1kg mass on spring
- Record extension (new length-original length)
- Repeat and find an average extension for each mass
