Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push, pull, twist or turn on an object.
What is a force measured in?
Newtons
What are balanced forces?
Balanced forces are the fact that the forces that two objects exert on each other always act in pairs. One object pulls (attracts) and the other object pushes (repels).
What are the different forces on an airplane?
The drag, the thrust, the lift and the weight.
What are the different types of forces?
change the shape of an object, make a stationary object move, make a moving object stop, change the speed (cause acceleration) of a moving object and change the direction in which an object moves.
What is a contact force?
A contact force is exerted when two objects are touching each other.
What is a field force?
A field force or non-contact force acts over a distance. Two bodies exert field forces on each other without touching each other.
What is a tension force?
A tension force is a pulling force that acts on an object causing it to become taut. Tension exists in a rope or cable when it is used to carry a load.
What is a compression force?
A compression force is a pushing or squeezing force on an object that causes it to squeeze into a smaller space.
What is a friction force?
Friction is a force that acts between two objects rubbing together. Friction can prevent motion or slow down a moving object. Friction also causes heat.
What are the four different types of friction?
Sliding friction, rolling friction, static friction and fluid friction.
What is a gravitational force?
Gravitational force is the force of attraction (pulling force) between two objects/ bodies over a distance due to their masses. Gravitational forces act in a gravitational field.
What is a field?
A field is a region of space that occurs around a force.
What factors does the size of a gravitational force depend on?
The bigger the masses of the two objects, the stronger the gravitational pull between them.
Gravitational pull will decrease with an increase in distance.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the indication of the amount of matter an object consists of. Mass is measured in kgs. The mass of a body/ object remains the same wherever it is measured.
Weight is an indication of the gravitational force exerted on the object by earth (or any other planet for that matter). Weight is measured in newtons. The weight of an object can change depending on where it is measured.
