Acids and Bases Flashcards
What are some examples of household acids?
Vinegar, citrus and coke
What are some examples of industrial acids?
H2S04 - Sulfuric Acid
HCl - Hydrochloric Acid
HN03 - Nitric Acid
What are some of the qualities of acids?
They taste sour and feel rough.
What are some examples of household bases?
Detergents, toothpaste and soup
What are some examples of industrial bases?

NH3 - Ammonia
K2C03 - Potassium Carbonate
What are some examples of the qualities of bases?
They taste bitter and feel slippery.
What is a neutral substance?
A neutral substance is neither an acid nor a base. A neutral substance has a pH level of 7.
What is the pH scale?
pH means power of hydrogen. It is a measure of how strong an acid or base is.
What is an indicator?
An indicator is a chemical/ natural substance that shows whether a substance is an acid or base.
What are some examples of natural indicators?
Litmus paper, rooibos tea, cabbage (red) water, turmeric water, red onion water
What are some examples of chemical indicators?
Bromothymol Blue, Universal Indicator, Phenolphthalein, Methyl Orange
