Forces Flashcards
What is force measured in?
Newtons
A force is either . . . ?
A push or a pull
What is the definition of contact and non-contact forces?
A contact force is where the force is experienced when two objects are touching.
A non-contact force is where objects don’t have to be touching to experience the force.
What are some examples of contact forces?
Upthrust, friction, air resistance, normal force, thrust, tension.
What are some examples of non-contact forces?
Gravitational field strength (weight), magnetic, electro-static.
What is the resultant force?
The resultant force is the affect of the forces once all of the forces have been in action. For example, if an object is on a surface, and there is 5N of weight going down and 5N of normal force going up, the resultant force would be 0N.
What happens to an object if a resultant force is acting on it?
It will either:
1. Accelerate the object (in a positive or negative direction)
2. Change the direction of the object
3. Change the shape of the object
If an object is moving at a constant speed, what is the resultant force on that object?
Zero Newtons (0N)
If there is no resultant force acting on a object then what must it be doing (two options)?
According to Newton’s first law, it will be either stationary or moving at a constant speed.
What are resultant force diagrams?
How do you draw a resultant force diagram?
