Elasticity and Hooke's Law Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three ways an object can be deformed?
A
It can be stretched (increase in length), compressed (a shortening in length) or bent (stretched on one side and compressed on the other)
2
Q
What is plastic deformation?
A
When an object doesn’t return to its original shape once it has been deformed.
3
Q
What is elastic deformation?
A
When an object does return to its original shape once it has been deformed.
4
Q
What is Hooke’s law?
A
Hooke’s law states that the amount of force applied to an elastic object is proportional to how far it stretches.
5
Q
When does Hooke’s law not work/apply?
A
When the elastic object has been over stretched/ past it’s limit of proportionality.
