Forces 1 Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity
They have magnitude but no direction
What is a vector quantity
Has both magnitude and direction
Give an example of a vector
Velocity force weight
Give an example of a scalar
Speed, time, distance
What is displacement
Distance travelled in a given direction
What is a force
A push of pull that acts on an object due to its interaction with another object
What is Newton’s third law of motion
When two objects interact they exert equal and opposite forces on eachother.
Give an example of Newton’s third law of motion
If a car hits a barrier it exerts a force on the barrier, the barrier exerts and equal force on the car but in an opposite direction
What is Newton’s first law of motion
If the forces acting on an object are balanced, the resultant force on the object is zero
What happens when the resultant force is not zero
The forces on the object are not balance so the movement of the object depends on the size and direction of the resultant force
What is a moment
The turning effect of a force
How can increase the size of a moment
Increase magnitude of the force
What is a lever
Used to exert a force that is greater than the effort
What does a low gear do
A low gear gives a high speed and a low turning effect
What is a high gear used for
Gives low speed and high turning effect
