Force & Motion Flashcards
acceleration
rate of change of velocity; can be calculated by dividing the change in the velocity by the time it takes the change to occur.
average speed
total distance an object travels divided by the total time it takes to travel that distance.
balanced forces
forces on an object that combine to give a zero net force and do not change the motion of the object.
constant speed
movement at a set speed
energy
the ability to do work
force
a push or pull exerted on an object.
friction
force that opposes the sliding motion between two touching surfaces.
inclined plane
simple machine that consists of a sloping surface, such as a ramp, that reduces the amount of force needed to lift something by increasing the distance over which the force is applied.
inertia
resistance of an object to a change in its motion.
interval
A definite length of time marked off by two instants
kinetic energy
energy a moving object has because of its motion; depends on the mass and speed of the object.
motion
an object’s change in position relative to a reference point over a period of time.
newtons
N = the SI unit of force
potential energy
the energy of position or shape, stored energy
pulley
simple machine that consists of a grooved wheel with a rope, chain, or cable running along the groove; can be either fixed or movable.
simple machine
any of the basic mechanical devices, including the lever, wheel and axle, pulley, wedge, screw, and inclined plane, one or more of which are essential to any more complex machine
speed
distance an object travels per unit of time.
unbalanced forces
forces on an object that push in the same direction and cause motion of the object
velocity
the speed and direction of a moving object.
work
transfer of energy that occurs when a force makes an object move; measured in joules.
weight
Also a force Measured in newtons Depends on gravity The force of an object pushing down on the ground and the ground pushing up on the object.
