Forage Harvesting and Silage Equipment Flashcards
Forage Harvesting
What is the reason forage crops are harvested?
Overwintering feed for livestock

Forage Harvesting
- Initially, does the forage needs to be cut to dry or harvested moist for silage?
- Cutting Equipment includes: (3) M-C, H, S
- yes, either one, as it depends on the moisture level.
- Mower - Conditioners
- Haybine
- Swathers
define…
mower/conditioner
- Conditioner Mower: Crimps and crushes newly cut hay to promote faster and more even drying
- Disc mower doesn’t crimp or condition. It cuts fine stemmed plants and spreads them out over a windrow to have the air dry it by itself.
Swather
cuts hay or small grain crops and forms them into a windrow (i.e. a row of hay r_aked up to dry_ before being baled or stored).
They aid harvesting by speeding up the process of drying the crop down to a moisture content suitable for harvesting and storage.
Haybine mower
Haybine is the brand name of the first mower-conditioner. It combined the sickle bar mower and the hay conditioner to promote faster drying hay all in one process.
Forage Harvesting
- If the forage is to be dried for hay, the swaths are ____ or tedded.
- Why?
- Define tedding.
raked
to allow air flow
to shake out and loosen (hay), so as to dry it; dries more than raking
(raking is done just before bailing)
After the forage has been dried for hay, by tedding or raking, what happens next?
Why?
The hay is baled.
To ensure there is healthy feed for the upcoming winter.
- swathed
- raked or tedded
- baled
- What happens to the baled hay?
Hauled to an area/facility
Hay Storage
Forage Harvesting
Forage stored as a moist feed that will be ensiled is collected with a ____ _____, transported by truck to a ___ and packed to create _____.
forage harvester
silo
silage
Fertilizer Application Equipment
What is applied to ensure optimal crop growth?
Are Fertilizers commonly blended?
What are the primary macronutrients in fertilizers?
(N) (P) (K) (S)
Nutrients
Yes
Nitrogen (N) Phosphorous (P) Potassium (K) Sulphur (S)
Plants also require secondary ______ and micronutrient.
