Food Webs Flashcards
What is a food chain?
The transfer of energy from one organism to another
What does a food chain always begin with?
A green plant called a producer
What does each arrow indicate?
The DIRECTION of energy flow
What do arrows always point from?
The organism being eaten
What do primary consumers eat?
They only eat green plants (producers)
What do secondary consumers eat?
Primary consumers
What do tertiary consumers eat?
Secondary consumers
What are primary consumers and secondary consumers known as?
Primary consumers are known as a herbivore (only eats plant material)
Secondary consumers are known as a carnivore (only eats animal material)
What do omnivores eat?
Plant and animal material
What are predators?
They are carnivores that eat other animals called prey
What is a food web?
A series of linked food chains showing the feeding relationships in a habitat
What is a pyramid of energy?
It’s a diagram that indicates the energy content of organisms at each stage of a food chain
What percentage of energy is lost from each link in a food chain?
Roughly 90% is lost
Give 3 reasons why 90% of energy is lost.
Keeping the body warm
Movement
Undigested food
What percentage of energy is passed on?
Roughy 10% is passed on
