What do you use to test for starch?
Iodine
How do you test for starch?
Add a few drops of iodine to the solid or liquid
What is the colour change for starch?
From Orange/yellow to blue black
What do you use to test for sugar?
Benedict’s reagent
What colour is Benedict’s reagent?
Blue
How do you test for sugar?
Add the food to a boiling tube and add 2cm cubed of Benedict’s. Place in boiling water for 3-5 minutes
What is the colour change for sugar?
Blue to green to brick red
What do you use to test for protein?
Sodium hydroxide and copper sulphate
What colour is sodium hydroxide and copper sulphate?
Sodium hydroxide is clear and copper sulphate is a pale blue
How do you test for protein?
Put the food in a boiling tube then add 1cm cubed of sodium hydroxide then add 3 drops of copper sulphate
What is the colour change for protein?
It should start as a pale purple then turn to a violet
What do we use to test for fat?
Methylated spirit
What colour is methylated spirit?
Clear
How do we test a for fat?
Put a piece of food in a boiling tube, add some methylated spirit and shake and leave for a few minutes. Add some water to a second boiling tube then add the methylated spirit and the piece of food
