Breathing And Respiration Flashcards
What is the PROCESS of respiration?
The process of glucose and oxygen reacting in cells to produce energy
What is respiration?
How we get the energy wee need
What are organ systems?
A collection of organs that work together in the digestive system
What is aerobic?
With oxygen
What is the circulatory system?
Carried the small soluble food molecules and oxygen to every cell in our body and gets rid of any unwanted waste
What is the respiratory system?
Oxygen is taken in via the lungs and carbon dioxide is removed
The oxygen is them absorbed into the blood stream, travels to the heart and is then pumped around the rest of the body
Why do we need energy?
- Movement (muscle contractions)
- Nervous impulses
- Temperature regulation (keeping our body at 37•
What are small air sacks called?
Alveoli
What is alveoli?
Air sacks at the end on he bronchioles
Where are the lungs located?
The thorax
What are the lungs protected by?
Rib cage
What is the thorax?
Upper part of body
What is the abdomen?
Lower part of the body
What is the trachea?
Where air flows through
What is the cartilage?
Keeps airways open
What happens to the trachea?
Beaches into two bronchi
How many bronchus goes into each lung?
One in each lung
What comes after the bronchus?
Smaller and smaller tubes called bronchioles
What is the pleural membrane?
line the lung and inside the rib cage
What happens to reduce the lungs rubbing off the rib cage?
The plural Cavity contains plural fluid
This lubricates the inside of the lungs as they inflate and deflate
What is ventilation?
Getting air into and out of the lungs
What is gas exchange?
Gases moving into and out of the blood
What is inhaling?
Breathing in
What is exhaling?
Breathing out
What happens when you inhale?
- Intercostal muscles contract and ribs move up and out
- Volume in chest cavity increases
- Diaphragm flattens
What happens when you exhale?
- Intercostal muscles relax and ribs move down and in
- Volume in chest cavity decreases
- Diaphragm move up into a dome shape
What is gas exchange2?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the alveolus oxygen will defuse from the high concentration in the blood and carbon dioxide which is a product of respiration will defuse from the low concentration
What is concentration?
The amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
How much oxygen do we breathe in?
21%
How much oxygen do we breathe out?
16%
How much carbon dioxide do we breathe in?
0.04%
How much carbon dioxide do we breathe out?
4%
How much nitrogen do we breathe in?
78%
How much nitrogen do we breathe out?
78%
How much water vapour do we breathe in?
A little
How much water vapour do we breathe out?
A lot
