Food Security Flashcards
1
Q
Statistics relating to food consumption and production:
A
- Roughly half of the total food requirements were met by the UK itself
- Not food self-sufficient
- UK household wasted £470 of food a year, high availability vs consumption
2
Q
Allotments:
A
- Locally sourced food reduces food miles to a minimum, promotes activity and improves community cohesion
- Sheffield University study in 2014 said that quality of allotment soil is better than most commercial arable farms
- Rising prices have led to long waiting lists, not everyone has access to them.
- Climate of the UK, not everything can grow
3
Q
Green Revolution:
A
- A large scale attempt to introduce high yield varieties during the1960s
- Not seen as a success
- Use of machinery meant that people lost traditional employment
- Increased production, lower prices, lower farmer wages
- Diesel pumps were provided for irrigation, used up ground water even faster, farmers couldn’t afford to repair them or buy fuel
4
Q
Organic Methods:
A
- Grown without any chemicals and the livestock are not with feed that has artificial additives
5
Q
Intensive farming:
A
- High levels of input(machinery, seeds and chemicals) to ensure high level output from each hectare of land
- This increases the yield, the health of the soil is affected.
6
Q
Fairtrade:
A
- Started in 1988
- Social premium paid to local producers
- This ensures that farmers get their fair price
- Protects their income from fall and encourages them to farm sustainably
- Also funds improvements for the community like water supply.
