Q

What happened in Deanwood, DC?

A
  • Deanwood (located in Ward 7) had a large influx of people moving there (1880-1886) during the Great Migration from VA, NC, and SC (huge boom, 22,000)
  • a lot of mom and pop shops (Black and Jewish-owned) and started seeing District Grocery Store cooperatives
  • Once big-boxed store started popping up those small stores started loosing business because they were unable to compete with times and quality of food
  • riots happened after MLK Jr’s death and people thought that was the reason stores moved out of the area but people and stores left before that (white flight) and violence was an additional excuse to leave

Q

What does it show us about urban food justice?

A

A lot of the food deserts/mirages are caused by similar instances. Also now we rely more on slave labor of farmworkers to keep big boxed stores open instead of local farmers.
