food chains Flashcards
1
Q
why do we need to eat?
A
- Because we need energy
- energy is necessary for organisms to grow and to function
- animals get energy from the food that they eat
- plants use sunlight, water and nutrients to get energy
plants use a process called photosynthesis
2
Q
producers
A
- produce their own food
- they don’t rely on any other Organism to survive
- they use sunlight water and nutrients
for example, plants
3
Q
consumers
A
- cannot make their own food
- need to consume plants and/or other animals
- the three types of consumers (herbivores, carnivals, omnivores)
- there are levels within the consumer food chain or food pyramid or food web
these levels are primary, secondary, tertiary ect.
4
Q
herbivores
A
- Only eats plants
- leaves, grass, flowers, seas, roots, fruit, bark, pollen etc
- they are vegetarians
- an example of herbivores are cows, horses, bunnies.
5
Q
carnivores
A
- Only eat meat
- this includes insects and all other animals
for example, felines, birds of prey, canines
- this includes insects and all other animals
6
Q
omnivores
A
- Can eat both plants and animals
humans, most bears, raccoons, and most primates
7
Q
decomposers
A
- decompose dead plants and animals and decompose them to simplify forms of matter
fungi and bacteria
8
Q
insectivores
A
- insectivores are organisms that eat insects
for example, insectivorous birds
9
Q
food chains
A
- shows how each living thing gets its food
- every food chain starts with a plant and end with an animal
food chains very rarely have decomposers
- every food chain starts with a plant and end with an animal
10
Q
what do the arrows mean
A
Arrows mean is eaten by or gives energy to
11
Q
what is the scientific formular for photosynthesis?
A
- Co2 + h2o ———> C6 H12 06 +O2
sunlightchlorophyll sugar // glucose
