  2. Budget: Many families have a specific amount of money for food each week/month. Cost of food depends on weather, time of year, costs of packaging and transportation. Many nutritious foods are inexpensive if you shop properly
  3. Different Types of Stores: Depending on where you shop for food, the cost can change. Planning where you shop will be important.
  4. When to Shop: It depends on your schedule and the amount of storage space you have.
  5. What to Buy: Plan your meal around Canada’s Food Guide. Buy more fresh and frozen foods rather than processed foods.
  6. Make a List: Plan the meals and snacks you are going to prepare for the week.
  7. Organize your List: Group items on your list according to the areas of the store.
  8. Unit Pricing: Unit pricing helps to compare the cost of items so you can find the most economical size and brand.
  9. Open Dating: Some food packages have a date stamped on them to help you know how fresh the food is. Open dating cannot guarantee the quality of the food. Quality is affected by the way the food has been handled and stored.
  10. Brand Names, House Brands and No-Name Products: You can often save money by buying products with the store’s own brand name.
  11. Grading: Grading ensures that producers and processors are paid according to the quality of their production.

A

HUNGER –is the physical desire for food.

A person can live only 3-4 weeks without food and only 2-3 days without water. The human body uses food for energy, growth, and body functions. When people are hungry, they begin to feel tired. When the stomach is empty, it contracts – this produces hunger pains that tell you to eat.

APPETITE –is a psychological need for food.

Various factors influence your appetite, especially the sight and smell of food. Taste buds are the sensitive areas of the tongue that identify tastes. Receptors are sensors in the nasal passages.
