FOM Chapter 8 Pre-flight Flashcards

1
Q

What is the process for handling an aircraft defect PRIOR to pushback?

A

If a defect occurs prior to pushback it should be deferred under MEL and an authorization number (also known as a MDDR number - refer to MEL Preamble) obtained by contacting MOC through Flight Dispatch. If the defect cannot be deferred under MEL or requires maintenance action then MOC must be advised so they can make appropriate arrangements. If this occurs at a station where local maintenance is provided by Air Canada personnel, local maintenance may be contacted to conduct the required maintenance action.

In any case, if the defect takes place after push back, contact MOC through flight dispatch using dispatch frequency or desk number.

Q

How do crews communicate aircraft defects once airborne?

A

When airborne, Flight Crews shall report all defects affecting airworthiness directly to MOC by using the ACARS SNAG transaction only. Flight Dispatch is copied on all ACARs messages sent via this method and all subsequent replies. An Aircraft Defect Log entry shall also be made when time permits.

Q

What do you do if fuel drips are reported by ground crew?

A

If, during the engine start, the ground crew reports a fuel leak from the engine drain mast, run the engine at idle for 5 min. If the leak rate decreases to less than 60 drops/minute, the aircraft can be dispatched without maintenance action. If the leak rate continues to exceed 60 drops/minute, shut down the affected engine and then restart. If the leak continues in excess of 60 drops/minute after 5 min, shut down the engine and advise maintenance personnel to investigate the leakage source.

Q

After fuelling, you are not provided with an air Canada fuel sheet. Is a receipt from the fuel provider on its own acceptable to accomplish the fuel check?

A

Yes. If a Fuel Sheet is not available another means of identifiable fuel uplift quantity or verification of the reliability of the aircraft fuel indicating system may be acceptable. Flight Crew are to use the fuel figures to record the FOB and Uplift sections on the OFP and enter the data into the ACARS to complete the fuel uplift check
