By what distance to you have to avoid thunderstorms? F 8.13.3.3
-Avoid amber areas when possible.
-When below freezing level by at least 10NM.
-When above freezing level by at least 20NM.
How high above a thunderstorm do you have to be to overfly it? F 8.13.3.2
-At least 5000ft above
-At least 10 000ft above if winds are greater than 100kts.
(Flight over thunderstorms is never recommended)
What is the formula to determine relative height of thunderstorm using radar?
distance (NM) x tilt (in °) x 100
ie; return showing 40nm and disappears at 3° down
40x3x100. a/c is 12000ft above.
When should you avoid T/O with regards to LLWS?
F 8.18.4.2
-Should avoid when 15kts or greater loss of airspeed reported.
LLWS Considerations
During weather briefing, Flight Crews should pay special attention to:
LLWS Considerations
• Inversions and the severity and movement of fronts in the vicinity of departure, destination and alternate airports; and
• Fronts with a surface temperature change of 6°C or more across the front and/or fronts moving at speeds of 30 knots or more; and
• The wind direction above and below the front
F 8.18.4.2
Fuel considerations for low temp cruise…
-When SAT -65°C or less monitor fuel temps.
-Dispatch should not plan flight at temps lower than -65°C for more than 90 min, or
-they should use Boeing fuel temp program.
How long do you have to file an ASR
An ASR must be filed within 24hrs. Reportable incidents found FOM 2.5.1 and 12.2.2
T/O restrictions with regards to icing.
T/O not authorized during,
-HAIL
-HEAVY ICE PELLETS
-MODERATE OR HEAVY FREEZING RAIN.
Landing restrictions with regards to icing.
Landing not authorized during,
-MODERATE OR HEAVY FREEZING RAIN
When does co-authority for flight watch commence? When does the PIC have final decision of any changes on the OFP?
-Once PIC accepts flt plan co authority for flt watch commences.
-Once T/O thrust is applied PIC has final decision on any changes to OFP (should advise dispatch of any flt plan change or major change in conditions)
Disagreement resolution with Flt Dispatch
Most conservative course of action.
PIC shall take conservative course of action and their decision is final.
How long must a delay be before an OFP package revision (delayed flights)
If there is a delay of 2 hrs or more Flt Dispatch will review OFP and revise or refile is required.

A321 taxi 9kg/min (1 eng) 15kg/min, flight 60kg/min
How is Cont Fuel determined?
-5 min fuel burn at est landing weight,1500ASL, ISA conditions, or
-difference in flt planned burn and actual burn for last 2 years on same city pair.
Protected fuel definition
Fuel planned to be available over a specific point. (destination, alternate…)
fuel burned to carry the extra fuel will be accounted for in “burn”
What fuel is protected?

CONT 5 MIN
ETOPS
SUPP (top up to ensure a specific amount of fuel over destination)
RESERVE
NAIFR SAP (second approach)
Which fuels does “min T/O fuel” include?
Burn
Reserve
MEL
Cont 5
NAIFR SAP
Altn
ETOPS
Does “min T/O” fuel include for terminal/enroute weather delays?
No
Minimum Fuel advisory
Occurs when crew is committed to land at a specific aerodrome (NAIFR, dropped alternate).
-Advise ATC asap and then at each comm transfer.
-It is not an emergency but advises an emergency situation may occur.
-No ATC priority (possible special handling)
-Must declare an emergency and advise why (low fuel and fuel in minutes remaining) if fuel situation warrants.
When should crews declare a Fuel Emergency? (Mayday, Mayday, Mayday)
Crews shall declare an emergency when they become aware that under existing or expected conditions flight will land with less than reserve fuel. They shall provide a conservative estimate in minutes of fuel remaining.
What shall the Flight Crew do in the event of a fuel spill?
Crews shall,
-cease fuelling immediately
-advise dispatch and cabin crew
-deplane pax if major fuel spill occurs ( greater than 1.5m in any direction or exceeding 12mm in depth)
-Ensure pax are kept well clear of the area
-A320- Normal APU shutdown must be completed
Low and Over for visual aircraft inspection
-Not recommended for inspection of landing gear.
-Prohibited for routine troubleshooting with passengers on board.
What are some airfield factors to consider when Landing with Damaged or Retracted landing gear?
-When possible proceed to airport with adequate ARFF.
-Use longest rwy into wind, preferably ashpalt vs concrete.
-Use inactive rwy if possible.
-ACR policy is that rwy not be foamed and land on rwy vs turf.
Overweight Landing
All Air Canada Rouge aircraft are certified to land overweight in abnormal or emergency situations.
For abnormal or emergency situations, authorized to land overweight provided that the WAT and landing distance required are met.
In all cases of overweight landings, it is important to consider brake energy required for stopping. Circumstances may allow some modification of braking technique to minimize brake energy levels, and procedures in the AOM should be reviewed.
advise Maintenance in advance so they can prepare for the overweight landing check, which shall be performed prior to the next departure;
logbook entry is required and shall include appropriate information such as aircraft weight, if a hard landing occurred, or if heavy braking was used.
F 12.8.4
Hot brake advisememt
Advise station and maintenance when ANY brake temp exceeds 500°
Confirm with ground crew that they have been advised of hot brakes when comm established.
What are landing incidents defined as?
Hard landing
Suspected hard landing
Abnormal tire wear
Any other occurrence that may have over stressed gear or caused damage to a/c.
Must enter into defect log and file ASR.
Urgent communications to cabin crew.
PA
“In Charge flight attendant report to/call the flight deck.
“Emergency Stations - Emergency Stations” 2 min prior to touchdown (2000ft AGL)
“Brace for landing - Brace for landing” 30 seconds to touchdown (500AGL)

Emergency
Advising pax of abnormal or emergency situations
-Pass control of A/C to other pilot if possible.
-use non-technical terms to explained the situation.
-Instill confidence by advising crew is well trained to deal with the situation.
-Refer to STAFF equipment as “safety vehicles”
-Avoid scary words like emergency, fire…
-Exit line…
