The rebel; suited to higher risk assignments

complies; suited to flexible assignments

does the minimum and does not care

wants to dominate but holds back; suited to stretch assignments and team leadership

What are the components to Kellerman’s Engagement Continuum - from low to high?
Isolates > Bystanders > participants > activists > die hards
What are characteristics of isolates?
Passive, unaware, tries to escape notice
What are characteristics of bystanders ?
stands aside; support the status quo
What are characteristics of participants?
can be supportive or adversarial; try to have some impact
What are characteristics of activists?
Feels strongly about the cause; can be important allies
What are characteristics of die hards?
have all consuming dedication, emerge in intense situations, takes great risks
how do you treat the top 3 groups of followers (participants, activists, and die hards)
Participants
- Determine whether they are supportive or adversarial.
- Seek their opinion and counsel.
Activists
- Give them autonomy.
- Let them influence others and take risks.
Diehards
- Try to understand what they see.
- Transition them from followers to leaders.
What is the team leadership model?
the leader’s job is to monitor the team and take whatever action is necessary to ensure team effectiveness.
