Explores individuals knowledge and experiences
Study attitude formation
May allow discussion of sensitive areas
Allows a group to be included vs individual interview
What is a focus group?
A data collection method that explicitly uses group interaction as part of the method
Groups differing views are collected through interaction with each other
What are the advantages of using focus groups?
Group processes can help individuals to explore and clarify their views
Allows involvement of those who do not want to be interviewed on own:
Hard to reach groups
Taboo subjects
Encourages participation-others like you
What are the disadvantages of using focus groups?
Generates group think
Some may find it hard to participate
Some may dominate discussion
Requires skilled facilitator
Challenges confidentiality
Participants will need to travel
Some groups will find this particularly difficult
